Metal Coin Striking Process for Challenge Coins and Commemorative Coins
Coin striking is a specialized metal forming process used to produce coins and medallions with deep, detailed relief. Unlike standard stamping, coin striking applies extremely high pressure to compress the metal between two engraved dies. This pressure forces the metal to flow into the fine details of the mold, creating the distinctive raised designs seen on challenge coins and commemorative medals.

This process is widely used for products where visual depth and precision are especially important, such as challenge coins, commemorative coins, and high-relief medals.

Preparing the Metal Blank
The coin striking process begins with the preparation of metal blanks, also known as planchets. These blanks are typically cut from brass or copper sheets and are carefully measured to ensure uniform thickness. The blanks may undergo an annealing process to soften the metal, making it easier for the material to flow during striking.

Before striking begins, the metal blanks are cleaned to remove oils or impurities that could affect surface quality.

High-Pressure Coin Striking
During production, the prepared blank is placed between two engraved dies within a coin press. When the machine activates, extremely high pressure compresses the blank and forces the metal to flow into the engraved design. This pressure allows the mold to transfer extremely fine details into the coin surface.

The result is a crisp design with deep relief, sharp edges, and clear textures that enhance the visual impact of the finished coin.

Edge Formation and Finishing
Many coins also feature detailed edges such as rope edges, reeded edges, or custom edge lettering. These features may be formed during the striking process or added through secondary machining.

After striking, the coins proceed through finishing steps including polishing, electroplating, antique finishing, or enamel coloring depending on the design.

Ideal for High-Detail Metal Products
Coin striking is particularly valued for its ability to produce highly detailed metal surfaces. The strong compression also improves the density and durability of the metal.

This process is commonly used for:
― Challenge coins
― Commemorative coins
― High-relief medals
― Collectible medallions

Because coin striking produces deep and precise relief, it remains one of the most respected methods for creating premium custom coins and commemorative metal products.
